It was an 80's themed race (how could I resist) so our first inclination was, of course, neon. But sometime about 4 days before the race pure and unadulterated genius hit. Everyone was going to be in neon. We were going to dress as Michael Jackson. And that is exactly what we did...
We were a huge hit. As we walked around the lot (it started and ended at Paramount Studios) people were actually stopping us to take our picture. We were feeling pretty good.
The race started with a full participant warm up led by a Nike master trainer. It was a little crowded, but also a really fun way to build the community of the race.
The race itself was the latest race I have ever been in. It didn't start until 10 am (I think they wanted a big college and sorority presence and assumed college students were NOT getting up early on a Saturday). It was kind of nice to start so late, but it got very warm very quickly. By mile 4 or 5 the three of us were dieing for some water.
The three of us went into this race with an attitude that this would be a "fun run". My friend S had never run a race before in her life and B and I promised that we would all finish together. There weren't a ton of supports on the street (I was spoiled in the marathon), but there was fun entertainment including a Gospel Choir at the turn around and "Thriller" dancers at mile 2.
Even with the heat, being dressed as MJ, and only having run once since the marathon (for those keeping track at home that's once in the last month) we still moonwalked across the finish in 1:01:13. And when I say moonwalked I don't mean it as a cute literary device, I mean that when we hit the finish the three of us turned around, tipped our hats, and finished MJ style.

Love that you dressed up for the race!
That looks like so much fun! How was it running the costumes?
Oh how I wish I had been there to see that awesome finish :) You definitely went out in style. And that's a great time considering you haven't run since you're marathon except for once. Glad you three had fun!
how cool!! i love your costume and was seeing info about this run all around LA. how neat you participated with your friends
hahaha--moonwalking across the finish?! That's awesome - I knew I liked you.
This is amazing! Sounds so fun!
That is awesome!! And a 10:00 race is so my kinda race!
I just stumbled across your blog and I'm so in awe that you ran a 10K! I am an on and off runner, oh those first few steps out the door in the morning are the absolute worst, but my best friend is a type 1 diabetic so I signed up for Seattle's Beat the Bridge in May and I'm going to try to convince her to run the 6K with me! Hopefully it will work out and we can help to find a cure for diabetes in the mean time :)
